Bougie Pearl's Coffee was inspired by memories of mornings spent with my grandmother, Minnie "Pearl" as she was affectionately called. She was a dainty woman who loved pearls and lace. She was a community staple. Very well-loved and respected everywhere she went. As a little girl, she would let me help her make her morning coffee before she started her day. I can remember sitting in the chair impatiently waiting for the kettle to whistle so that I could grab the spoon and curate the best cup of coffee my six-year-old self could manage.  3 teaspoons of instant coffee, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and just a few splashes of milk, careful not to add too much or we would have to make it over! All of that for her only to take a few sips and leave the rest on the kitchen counter while she went out to serve the community. I would wait until she left and drink a few sips. I had to because back then she used to tell me that if I drank coffee too early I wouldn't grow!

When my grandmother grew older and unable to do things on her own I became her very own barista if you will. Every morning she would ask for a half cup of coffee. She would have her coffee just the way she taught me to make it or you guessed it...I would have to make it over! The perfect cup. I would make a full cup and split it with her. I finally no longer had to worry about not growing. I only made it to 5'2". I blame all of those sneaky sips of coffee as a child!

 

Now that she is no longer here those are the moments of her that I cherish the most. Our morning chats over a half cup of coffee, and the biggest headline of that morning's newspaper. To this day I still make a full cup of coffee and only drink half. It will forever be engraved on my heart as "our thing".
